Communicate Scale & Context

Organised by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and spanning five days with over 40’000 estimated participants, Singapore FinTech Festival 2018 is the world’s largest platform for the global fintech community.

Returning for its third year, the festival was conducted its most massive scale and intense pace yet. Over 250 global luminaries from the fintech sector, including Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, gathered to speak on the topics as wide-ranging as A.I. in finance, cryptocurrency, and the future of money and banking.

Communicate Pain Points

The robust meeting of minds at Singapore FinTech Festival produced an immense wealth of insight -- yet participants faced being inundated and overwhelmed by the information.

The fact that the festival’s sessions were spread across five concurrent stages made it impossible for a single participant to attend them all. Moreover, with over 60 hours worth of speeches, panels and sessions, it was easy for participants to miss the most salient points of each session amidst all the noise.

Purely auditory information, such as those in talks and panels, are difficult to remember, and even harder to retain. With the conference spanning three consecutive days, many participants were ill-equipped to remember the previous day’s content -- much less take the festival’s knowledge with them into the future.

Without retention and archival, the invaluable knowledge of the festival is largely lost with the end of the event, hampering its potential to reach a larger international and industry audience through time.

Communicate Process

Idea Ink was engaged by festival organisers for the third year running to address these pain points through graphic recording.

With our niche in grappling with technical content in the sweet spot between the analytical and creative, Idea Ink transposed over 70 session’s essence into elegant and effective visual summaries.

Communicate Solution

To solve the lack of visibility over key insights Idea Ink colour-coded these summaries across the festival’s three days and nine themes -- creating our largest sketch wall yet.

At 28 m wide and 3.6 m high, our sketch wall enabled participants to easily locate the sessions they missed out on. Furthermore, the wall gave participants a literal big picture of the festival, allowing them to separate signal from the noise, and to grasp the festival’s key insights at a glance.

Over the course of the festival our memorable sketch wall buzzed with activity as it gathered lively discussion, countless social media posts, and engaged participants refreshing their memory.

While this addressed the loss of content retention within the festival itself, the subsequent digitisation of our sketch wall into high-res images (PDF and JPEG) created knowledge assets to be easily shared by organisers and participants alike -- thus ensuring the longevity and archival of insights.
